Hear about safety recalls before your renter does

Fleetwire checks NHTSA's public recall database every day for the year, make and model of every car in your fleet. When a new recall comes out, you get a text and the details land on that car's Maintenance tab, so you can book the fix before the next trip.

Why it matters

Recall letters go to the address on the title

Manufacturers mail recall notices to the registered owner, and that letter can easily sit in a pile or go to an old address. Meanwhile the car keeps going out on trips. Marketplaces can pull a listing for an open recall, and a renter who finds out first won't think much of you. Fleetwire watches for recalls so you don't have to check every car by hand.

  • Checked daily. Every year, make and model in your fleet, against NHTSA's recall database.
  • A text when something new comes out. One alert that names the affected cars, plus a notification in your dashboard.
  • Serious ones flagged. When the manufacturer advises not driving the car, or parking it outside because of fire risk, the alert says so up front.
  • The full recall on the car's page. What part is affected, what can go wrong, and the manufacturer's remedy.

How it works

Add your cars, and the checking runs itself

There's nothing to connect. If a car has a year, make and model, it's covered. Want to see what's open on a car right now? Try the free recall check.

1

Add a car

Enter the VIN and Fleetwire fills in the year, make and model from NHTSA's VIN decoder. You can also type them in.

2

We check every day

Each day Fleetwire asks NHTSA about every year, make and model in your fleet and saves any new recall campaigns.

3

You get the alert

A new recall triggers a text and a dashboard notification. The campaign details show up on the car's Maintenance tab.

Part of keeping your fleet road-ready

Recalls sit with the rest of the car's upkeep, so one screen shows everything a car needs before its next trip.

Recall alert questions

Where does the recall data come from?

From the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's public recall database, the same source behind nhtsa.gov/recalls. Fleetwire isn't affiliated with or endorsed by NHTSA. We read the public data so you don't have to.

Does it check my exact car by VIN?

No. NHTSA publishes recalls by year, make and model, and that's how Fleetwire matches them. A recall can cover only some cars of a model, for example a certain build range, so treat an alert as "this car may be affected." Confirm with the manufacturer or at nhtsa.gov/recalls using the VIN before you book the repair.

Which vehicles are covered?

Cars, trucks and vans, plus trailers, powersports and golf carts. NHTSA doesn't publish recalls for boats or rental equipment, so those listings aren't checked.

How will I be notified?

By text message to your account's phone number, plus a notification in your Fleetwire dashboard. You can turn the text off under Settings → Notifications.

Will Fleetwire stop a recalled car from being booked?

No. Fleetwire passes along what the manufacturer and NHTSA publish, and what you do with the car is your call. Most recalls are routine. A few come with a manufacturer advisory not to drive the car, or to park it outside, until it's repaired. Fleetwire flags those clearly, so you can decide whether to block its dates.

Is there a law about renting out recalled cars?

In the US, federal law bars rental companies above a certain fleet size from renting out a car with an open safety recall until it's repaired. Marketplaces have their own rules too. Fleetwire gives you the information but isn't legal advice, so check what applies to your business.
